Following the successful completion of the modernization programme that was delivered to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service and which regarded the development of a Modern Meteo Radar Network offering nationwide coverage, Space Hellas has now undertaken the modernization of four more Radar units. It should be noted that in the context of a separate project, Space Hellas has already upgraded the receiver side of the four radars in question and installed another three new units, integrating all the above into a single network with integrated software for the processing and presentation of meteo data. Moreover, the company is a participant of the Joint Venture that was established for the modernization of the HNMS in view of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
At the current stage Space Hellas has assumed upgrading – digitization and technical support on the transmitter side as well as reconstruction of the pedestals for the four HNMS meteorological radars in the areas of Andravida, Ymittos, Larisa and Thessaloniki.
The objective of the project – budgeted at approx. € 1.6 M – and with a completion timescale projected for December 2009, is upgrading the quality of the meteo radar network so that it may cover the largest possible portion of the country, and be capable of generating high-quality meteo products. The result will be the collection of a greater volume of meteo information for processing which, when combined with the HNMS’s other meteo information collection systems, will lead to the production of reliable local forecasts.
